Im always at a constant pace of doing my daily routine. One of the few movies which leave this wonderful feeling of being human with us. Simply some of the very best images I've witnessed in the medium of film. His artistry is in a class of it's own, however. But it seems he hasn't evolved as a storyteller at all. When I first saw 'Voices of a Distant Star' over 10 years ago, I was very excited for Shinkai's future. First and foremost the film is dependant on its message and its story. The character are fleshed out and believable. But there is a good story there, an important one even. 'A Silent Voice' isn't without superficial sentimentality. Behind Shinkai's delicate aesthetic and directional touch his stories and characters are actually pretty shallow. It's almost overbearing, how much Shinaki wants his audience to feel the emotions of his characters with the sentimental and even cheesy music, constant pillow shots, and the sulking inner monologues. Shinkai relies too much on superficial elements to evoke emotion. Shame the former was so overshadowed by the latter. I feel like 'A Silent Voice' is superior to 'Your Name'.
